Visiting Trieste is now even easier thanks to the new Trieste Transport Guide, designed for visitors who want to explore the city using buses, trams, bike sharing and ferry services.
Created by Trieste Trasporti, the guide is available free of charge in Italian, English and Slovenian and brings together all the essential information you need to navigate the city’s public transport network.
If you’re staying at our hostel, it’s a great starting point for planning your days. We’re close to the train station, the city centre and the famous Opicina Tram, while buses, bikes and ferry services make it easy to explore beyond the heart of Trieste.
Everything You Need to Know About Public Transport in Trieste
The Trieste Transport Guide explains how to use the city’s buses, the main types of tickets available and where to buy them.
You can pay directly on board using a contactless card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The glimble FVG and Tpl Fvg apps also allow you to purchase digital tickets. With glimble FVG, you can check real-time bus schedules and plan journeys combining different modes of transport.
Getting Around Trieste at Night
Planning to enjoy Trieste after dinner? The guide also includes information about Notturno TSonDemand, the city’s on-demand night bus service.
The service operates on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM and, from September to June, on Wednesdays too. Bookings and ticket purchases are made through the dedicated app.
It’s particularly useful if you’re staying at a hostel and want to enjoy the city’s nightlife without worrying too much about catching the last bus.
The Opicina Tram, Right on Our Doorstep
The guide also features one of Trieste’s most beloved icons: the Opicina Tram, which first opened in 1902 and remains one of the city’s most distinctive experiences.
Staying at Casali Hostel comes with an extra advantage: we’re just steps away from the tram’s city route and one of the spots where it performs its manoeuvres. It’s so close that it’s practically part of the hostel’s everyday scenery. The terminus in Piazza Oberdan is also just a short walk away.
More than just a means of transport, the Opicina Tram offers a journey through Trieste’s history and a unique way to travel from the city centre up to the Karst Plateau.
Bike Sharing and Ferries to Muggia
Getting around Trieste doesn’t always mean taking the bus.
The guide also introduces BiTS – Bike Sharing Trieste, the city’s public bike-sharing service, available through the Weelo app.
And if you’re looking for a different perspective, why not hop on the Trieste–Muggia ferry? It connects the two towns with a scenic journey across the Gulf of Trieste.
It’s a lovely way to turn a simple journey into a little travel experience.
